Notre histoire

La Cité des Associations, the first House of Associations in Brussels, was born from two observations and a collective shock.

First, the realisation that association leaders spend an enormous amount of time on administrative, legal or financial tasks that keep them away from their core mission. Second, the growing complexity of managing an ASBL: legal obligations, financial management, HR, subsidies… areas where small structures often find themselves alone.

Then came the health crisis. It paused activities, drove volunteers away, weakened finances and revealed how fragile the associative fabric truly is. Many ASBL survived thanks to the energy of their teams, but all felt the same need: better support.

In this context, one of our administrators — a jurist responsible for monitoring subsidised ASBL in a Brussels municipality — met dozens of association directors. Several are now administrators of La Cité. All expressed the same difficulties: facing technical questions alone, searching for answers among multiple actors — lawyers, accountants, social secretariats, federations, notaries, sometimes even other ASBL — without ever finding a single place able to support them globally.

La Cité des Associations was created to respond to this reality: offering a space where associations can be guided, supported and strengthened. A place that simplifies, gathers and secures. A place designed so that ASBL managers can finally devote their time to what truly matters: their mission.
